What is the issue with the MIME Sniffing Standard?

Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) is a dead acronym that this standard keeps alive to avoid a term collision with media queries. That's a mistake. There are many things in language, technical or otherwise, that take on different meaning based on context. Consider the term "attribute" as it is used in the web platform.

I realize that this is suggesting a big change and it will require some additional care, but my experience with this sort of thing is that the extra work often returns unexpected dividends in terms of improving clarity and precision.
