Lately people have been asking about our pricing plan. While we’re not ready to reveal it quite yet, we are ready to talk about one aspect of it: GitHub will host open source projects for free.
There will, of course, be a reasonable size limit. To give some context, a fresh checkout of the 100k+ LOC Rails project is only 2.2 megs. Furthermore, only 3 of GitHub’s 2000 existing users are using more than 50 megabytes on public projects. Git is very space efficient.
What about forks? Well, let’s say you’re hosting a 40 megabyte open source project and I fork it. Because Git is so awesome at handling space, my forked repo uses less than 1 megabyte initially.
Big open source projects needing more than the limit should contact us. We’d love to sponsor your development.
GitHub is most definitely the best way to do open source. Sign up for a beta invite (if you haven’t already) and see for yourself.

The getclicky web analytics is really slowing down all your webpages. I’m having to put getclicky into my /etc/hosts file to prevent webpages from getting stuck during page load. On some pages, it required almost 16 seconds before getclicky going through. I assume it’s for web tracking since it’s just a javascript file with a 1×1 pixel image.
Thanks for the heads up, we’ve replaced getclicky with google analytics.
hmm… how much is the ‘reasonable space’? 100 mbytes like on repo.or.cz? And, are you likely to grant exceptions?
ruphy: yes and yes
That is wonderful news! I can actually drop my bare repo on my website now. That said, is there going to be a place we can donate or get upgraded accounts? The not-maintaining-gitweb feeling I get every time I use this alone is worth some token of gratitude.
The site seems a lot snappier now, which is great since using the site was a lot less enjoyable than it could have been due to the slow page loads.
What’s the mechanism for flagging one’s project as open-source going to be?
ionfish, if the repo isn’t private then, well… by definition the source is open. ;)
Thanks for the update – been wondering about this. Now if you could do something similar for Lighthouse ;-)
I’d like an option to use github as a repo during development (when you might not want the repo publicly accessible).
Perhaps a grace period for private repos, after which time they become public? Or the option to give public repos a lower profile, so they are not announced on the Repos roll call until you are ready with an initial release.
The site was very slow to browse last week, I thought the problem was my end. Thanks for fixing it, snappy enough now (although google analytics stalls its fair share of sites… perhaps through poor integration).
Ah, this is the life. Thanks, hubsters, huberos, hubniks, or whatever you go by.
@broughcut: I would think at that stage, you would just not push your changes up to github. It’s easy enough to push/pull changes between you r team’s local machines if sharing is an issue in your development.
Thanks for clearing this issue up. With the warnings on the site about you thinking about charging I was trying not to get too settled with github. Now that you’ve elaborated on your policy (and I think it’s a fantastic one) I envision myself being here a while.
