I get asked many questions about Photok.
Most of them are asked more than once. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions and their answers 🙂.
Questions
How does Photok work?
Photok copies your photos into its local app storage. This storage is by default not accassable by anyone else than Photok itself. Additionally Photok uses AES encryption to fully encrypt your photos inside the app storage. This way the photos cannot be accessed, even if your device gets rooted to hacked.
Are backups encrypted?
Yes. Backups are encrypted just like inside the app. When restoring, the original password is required.
How does the encryption excacly work?
For encryption Photok is using AES/GCM/NoPadding.
I had done a little research about AES before creating the app, and this seemed to be the most secure.
But I have to mention that I'm not a professional when it comes to encryption. I know some of the theory, but the encryption 100% relies on the implementation in Java/Kotlin.
A hash of your password is directly used as the encryption key. Therefore: Your photos are just as safe as your password!
When is the next update coming?
Photok does not have a timed release plan. A new version is released when all issues and features are done. To see what is planned for a specific version you can lookup the Board or the Milestones
Can you implement feature xy?
The development process of Photok is publicly visible at GitHub. If you have an idea for a new feature, please search the Board first. If you can't find it there, you can create a new one or send me an E-Mail.
Help! I hid Potok and the Phone Dial code is not working. How can I access my Photos?
With version 1.4.0 of Photok the Recovery Menu was introduced. If you want to access Photok again, and your code isn't working try this:
1. Enable Airplane Mode
2. Press the fake Phone Icon of Photok
3. Press the fake Phone Icon of Photok again within 5 seconds
Now the recovery Menu should open. Here you can open the app without the dial code or reset the hide Photok setting completely.
