The things is, unlike ANSI, the SON apparently hasn't published codes to represent LGAs. ISO-3166 codes for Nigeria stop at State level (I will incorporate those, but they're frankly not that useful). Postal codes exist, but they're not useful by LGA; using them will require increasing granularity to settlement level. One can make a direct enquiry with SON. Do you have any other ideas?

TL; DR: The package strives to follow strict , widely accepted conventions for administrative subdivisions.

The philosophy of the package is to strive to be canonical. So in the case of LGAs, the Nigerian Constitution is the only true reference. The (political) wards are useful for data management but they are not, to the best of my knowledge, cast in stone. For instance, I once read somewhere that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been known to change wards.

This is where ISO codes would have been helpful. Postal codes on the other hand are canonical in Nigeria and can be incorporated in the package, but there will be a disconnect as LGAs and wards are not coded.

Also, the term "district" no longer exists in governance parlance in Nigeria. But if by "district codes" we mean postal codes, these can be safely incorporated. But it seems the political wards are more commonly used than postal codes for planning and implementing projects and programmes in Nigeria. So, we can add the postal codes to the package, but what we actually need are codes at the LGA and ward level (if the wards are not redrawn every election cycle).

The official postal code data are not currently available as NIPOST (https://www.nipost.gov.ng) lookup site is down. I have scraped data from unofficial sources and reviewed it, but I don't know if I will actually use it for this package. I have written NIPOST to see if there's any way they will help out.

@OmoBe, I looked at the site you shared and quickly identified some gaps. I had previously tried scraping the data from this site: https://nairapostalcode.com.ng/. I was able to extract quite a bit until I hit the roadblock of missing data. Quite frustrating, to say the least...
