Not able to use @layer in my Vite + React.js project

This is my index.css file
@tailwind base;
@tailwind components;
@tailwind utilities;

@layer components {
.myContainer{
@apply container px-40 py-16 mx-auto
}
}

This is a div in my component which uses this class 'myContainer'

Even though everything seems fine, these styles don't apply to this div
