NanaZip will provide a $99.99 Sponsor Edition addon to the Microsoft Store to attract more sponsors and contributors. It's free for NanaZip repository contributors and NanaZip sponsors who sponsored before March 30, 2024.

The only difference for NanaZip Sponsor Edition is showing the "Proudly Sponsored" button instead of the "Sponsor NanaZip" button in the next stable version of NanaZip's toolbar like the Visual Studio administrator mode.

image

Hope every NanaZip user is happier than before. Here are some imaginative examples.

  • Most users: We are happy with using a $99.99 product freely without feature differences.
  • Contributors: We want to show "Proudly Sponsored" button to others. It's free because we are the contributors. Contribute it if you want to get that free.
  • Sponsors: We can show the "Proudly Sponsored" button to others because we deserve that.
  • The author of NanaZip, Kenji Mouri: Finally, NanaZip has the price. Nobody will think this is a worthless product. Efforts from contributors and I should have a reference price even NanaZip is a fully free and open-source project.

For more information, please read https://github.com/M2Team/NanaZip/blob/main/Documents/SponsorEdition.md

Important Note: If you are a NanaZip sponsor who sponsored before March 30, 2024 without receiving the e-mail, or you are a NanaZip contributor. Please contact me via e-mail (Kenji.Mouri@outlook.com) and I will send you the link for getting it. (But you need to prove you are the eligible person properly. Maybe a related screenshot.)

Get rid of this button entirely, waste of memory and an eyestore. There isn't even an option to disable it under "View". The first thing I did was try to get rid of it. I will look for another branch if this keeps up.

A single button costs barely any memory. The only suggestion I'd have is removing the emojis because they're visually distracting compared to the black and white UI. As far as encouraging donations and sponsorship, I think this is a decent way to go about it.

While I kind of agree with the other person, it is kind of an annoyance to see big text on the side telling me to sponsor, I personally don't think it should be removed just because of that. I think it's a pretty good way to get donations, some people wouldn't like it, which is why I feel like it should be toggleable.

Here is the new UI layout for the sponsor button. (I tried to follow your suggestion.) The emojis are removed, also I removed the button background may look more elegant than before.

First, many thanks and congrats for releasing NanaZip 3.0 @MouriNaruto!

Since release 3.0 on every run, NanaZip started connecting to Microsoft servers. I guess, it's for Microsoft's license checking for introduced Sponsor Add-on. While I blocked them on the firewall, those connections may not wanted behaviour by others. Some options to disable them should be considered.

You are right, the internet access behavior is from the Microsoft Store License Check API. (I originally thought they would use the Software Licensing API like Windows.)

I also add that behavior to known issues because I cannot solve it elegantly.

NanaZip will only check the Sponsor Edition addon licensing status the first time you launch NanaZip File Manager or click the sponsor button to optimize the user experience.

This is also noted in the known issues.

I don't want it to check for a sponsored edition. I don't want it to connect to the Internet. I don't want a giant button begging for donations. Erase this feature.

Then fork the project, remove the feature and maintain your own builds. It's open source, you're getting it for free. This level of entitlement is embarrassing.

LMAO

You're entitled because you used the project for years without giving anything back, then acting as if you're the project's boss. Learn how to ask nicely or go pound sand.

Someone who only saw begging for donations is childish, there are almost no beggers begging at $99.99 at once in the world because it's too expensive, lol.

Someone will feel interested if they see this policy as the contributor policy, lol.

I don't think that.

I also should not provide the option to disable because this is the honor system for people who have contributed.

If you don't want to see anything begging as you think, you can become a contributor by sending me a PR. (Of course, the requirement is the PR should be merged. Also, I don't accept any PR for disabling the sponsor button.)

Note: I have seen a lot about someone who says to the public that stop using my projects before. Don't use similar words to try to warn.

I don't care about that because I create projects to satisfy me first, I will be happy if my projects can help others, and I'm lucky for that because many people think my work is useful.

Just for fun or happiness is always the priority. It's time to archive the project if I cannot make it more fun. That's my style.

I don't ask people to pay me actively. But at least I hope I can build something I want. (Of course, these are conformed with public order and morals.)

The other user was out of line but I do agree that the emojis should probably be removed, seems you are already going to do that though, amazing release otherwise.

I'd like to add that I think there should be 1 coffee emoticon on left or right side (not sure which would look better) next to the text instead of 2 hearts. 1 coffee emoticon would look pretty clean imo. (only for sponsors)

@Void48 I choose to remove all emojis in the next release for a more fluent design style.

I have an idea. If possible, why not change the icon to a simple cup or heart, depending on if you bought the sponsor or not? It wouldn't take up that much space, and I think it would fit with the other icons in the top bar.

@MouriNaruto

@mystic-akito I had thought about that. But I think explicit words is important to make that as a badge.

Kenji Mouri

@MouriNaruto What if when you hover over the Icon, then it'll show the text?

@mystic-akito Everyone knows the smile icon in Internet Explorer, Office, etc will be ignored. So, the explicit text in all states of NanaZip's sponsor button is necessary.

Fair enough.

Personally, I think the asking price is too steep for most people to even consider. I mean, why would someone pay $100 when you can use Windows 11's brand new RAR and 7Z support or use 7-Zip for free or run WinRAR in its endless trial? I get that you'd like sponsorship and that's perfectly fine and reasonable, but I think you'd also get more people willing to pay a reasonable amount instead of a exorbitant $100 fee.

If it was $5 or even $10, I'd be interested. But $100, that's way too steep when there are free alternatives, IMO.

The sponsor button is a little annoying to be honest, but thanks for at least fixing the issue with the slow loading images as that was pretty annoying. Though for those willing to sponsor, maybe an option to hide the sponsorship appreciation button/message too? I'm sure they'd appreciate it.

@BooBerry

You will know that "happy with using a $99.99 product freely without feature differences" for most users is by design from https://github.com/M2Team/NanaZip/blob/main/Documents/SponsorEdition.md#purpose

You think the price is too steep because you are not the target of NanaZip Sponsor Edition. Because you can get it with $0 if you contribute to this repository via pull requests. So, even if it was $5 or even $10, you're not interested, you're a typical liar in some views.

There is no option for hiding the sponsor button because making it more visually distinct is important for the community plan which can be named contribute-or-pay in some views. Source code contributors are the priority for me. In another aspect, we provide a way to buy the honor and make someone look like a source code contributor. So, the price is not steep for that.

If the price is too cheap, people won't be happy to attend the source code contribution. This is what I don't want to see.

In the current status, nobody will think this is a worthless product. Efforts from contributors and I should have a reference price even though the NanaZip is a fully free and open-source project.
