Migrated from the original issue at https://www.assembla.com/spaces/tracks-tickets/tickets/715

Instead of taking me to a new view when I click on the "search icon" which then shows the text box, couldn't we have a small dropdown textbox where we can fill in search query?

I'd like to postpone this to 2.0 to get 1.6 out of the door.

Working on this.

Would it be better to have the search box permanently visible on the top right of the page?

I've added this a little while back to Tracks, but people did not like it (see mailing list archives). So removed it from the top-right

You could look at the code in the commit history and the arguments made against it :-)
