Running WSA on Windows 10

Hi, do you think WSA can run on Windows 10? I patched the WSAClient to skip the SO verification (RTLGetVersion). When I click 'Manage developer settings' the Client starts loading and a new 'vmmem' is created but closes after a short time.

I am looking into this right now, too. You clearly got further than me: I extracted the wsa msixbundle package (the 1.2GB version), then extracted WsaPackage_1.7.32815.0_x64_Release-Nightly.msix, modified the manifest in there to <TargetDeviceFamily Name="Windows.Desktop" MinVersion="10.0.19044.1319" MaxVersionTested="10.0.22000.120" />, deleted the other manifest files and tried to install with:

add-appxpackage -Register "D:\Desktop\wsa\WsaPackage_1.7.32815.0_x64_Release-Nightly\AppxManifest.xml"

But this gives me (after enabling developer mode):

add-appxpackage : Fehler bei Bereitstellung. HRESULT: 0x80073CF6, Das Paket konnte nicht registriert werden.
error 0x80080204: While preparing to process the request, the system failed to register the windows.customInstall
extension due to the following error: Das Manifest des Appx-Pakets ist ungültig.

(sorry can't find a way to change the language of just powershell)
It says the manifest of the appx-package is invalid.

I am looking into this right now, too. I used IDA Pro 6.8 to check the disassembly and found the function where WSAClient checks the Windows version and replaced the relevant instructions with a bunch of NOPs. This allows the client to start loading, but it stops after a few seconds. I still don't know why and I would have to debug the process to gather more information. But my skill is very, very limited. I guess I won't get past this point.

HexEdit WSAClient.exe looking for BD DC 00 00 00 F0 55, and replace F0 55 with 00 00

F0 55 = 22000 (0x55F0) (build number)

It won't matter though because when you start wsaclient, it tries to run wsaservice and fails. Bunch of other things need to happen, like run init and boot the kernel in .\tools, get those system/vendor.img loaded and and then there's a vhdx that needs to be mounted if you hope to run anything in userland.

I guess some parts of WSA is implemented in the Windows and every appx package with a special permission can use it. then if it's like this you won't be able to run WSA on a version of Windows without that parts.

In fact, it's not really Windows 10, but an earlier version of Windows 11. Instead of using the preview version, I prefer to use the stable version (release) of Windows 11, which has fewer bugs than the preview version.

@3dluvr Of course! Microsoft added GPU support to WSL later, and I guess WSA uses that heavily.

You're wrong, WSL2 only requires Windows Hypervisor that's available on Windows 10, WSL2 itself isn't part of Windows can be installed and upgraded separately. WSA doesn't need WSLg as Android has Surfaceflinger instead of Wayland, and WSLg actually is a small linux distro with RDP and Wayland server.

I also copied icu.dll icuin.dll and icuuc.dll from a W11 install to the unpacked directory. Then I get the error that it's not compatible with Windows Server.. or well, wrong OS: WrongOsErrorDescription. So it has a OS version check built in somewhere. (makepri dump /if resources.pri /of resources.xml)

This is actually the kind of thrashing around that KnownDLL's is designed to fix, if a DLL is on the list the system doesn't go searching around in the normal order and immediately just loads it from the known location. Less thrashing = faster DLL load and in turn faster launch

Who cares what KnowDLLs fixes, or whether it makes DLLs load faster. We are looking for a way to load something outside that walled garden.

I proposed a way above how to go around it, but no one has tried it yet. Personally I don't have any spare cycles to do it myself now and was hoping someone else would give it a try.

@CMingTseng no, @Gleenan said they don't like w11, but using ExplorerPatcher you can make w11 to look like w10, you can get w10 taskbar, start menu, and file explorer and window switcher. You can disable rounded corners too.

Well, there's nothing to do here anymore. Only viable route is to wait for and hope that WSA works with 22H2.

It is very unlikely that 22H2 will change anything. Matter a fact, it's literally just a number change between 21H2 and 22H2. You can update to 22H2 by following this: https://www.neowin.net/news/optional-updates-confirm-windows-10-22h2-is-coming/

Otherwise, MS wants everyone to switch to Windows 11, that's basically it.

Below are the steps I followed:

• Update Windows 10 to 22H2 and make sure WSL2 is installed.
• Install Debian from the Microsoft store.
• In Debian, run the following:

• Save AppxManifest.xml and exit your text editor.
• Download latest release .7z file from https://github.com/cinit/WSAPatch/releases and copy the two DLL files in it to the WsaClient directory in the files you just unzipped (e.g. C:\WSA\WsaClient). This directory should already contain WsaClient.exe
• Run Run.bat from the files you unzipped (e.g. C:\WSA\Run.bat). If you get a Microsoft Defender error, click "More info" and then "Run anyway".

If everything goes well, after installing, the Google Play Store should open (if you chose that option in run.sh)
