The correct pronunciation on IPA is something like /ˈbo.tu/ Some dialects might say it /ˈbo.to/ but I am not 100% sure. Both sound correct to me. |
Thanks, Cesar. It's great to have a native speaker to weigh in on this. Maybe even there could be a 2-second wav clip to help others. I know it's a minor point in the whole scheme of things, but I think it's interesting and fun, and it could help others learn a little bit. |
FWIW we pronounce it /ˈbo.to/ |
Not that it matters, but a motivation for me to bring up this topic was I heard a coworker (American) say /'bɑt.ou/ (as though rhyming with "Lotto") and it hurt my ears ... 8^) |
It's a non-trivial question, to be sure. I've personally not known whether it rhymed with "go to" (thank you, BASIC), "Togo" (the country), or "Lotto" (short for lottery). My tongue tends to select the second or third option, somewhat at random. According to IPA, methinks the correct American English pronunciation (going by @JordonPhillips 's comment) would be The rational behind the "Lotto" rhyme is this: This library deals with automation. Hence, robots. Robots > Robotics > Bots > "Bot-oh!" I didn't know until today about the Amazon river dolphin. That's a nice, natural touch. It would be worth emphasizing in documentation (and marketing materials?) because it helps us gear-heads remember that there's a Big World out There and we should also go enjoy it sometimes. I'll try to retrain my brain to say "boto" (rhymes with Togo) from now on. Goooo ... boto river dolphins! 🐬 🐬 |
Btw, you can listen to the pronunciation on Forvo: https://forvo.com/word/boto/#pt_br The one by the user RenatoGalves is quite good This one is for "boto-cor-de-rosa" which is the full name of the river dolphin: |
Thanks, Cesar, those links are very helpful. That's exactly what would help a lot in the readme. |

Hi, to judge by another issue (#1023) it looks like this project is indeed named after the Amazonian dolphin called a boto.
I didn't see anything about that in the readme, maybe it can be added. Also the pronunciation is not obvious for non-Portuguese speakers, maybe something can be added about that too. I seem to recall a Brazilian neighbor said (approximately) "boh-tou".
