This is something trivial, since the user can pinpoint their exact location on the map, but it would still be nice to provide localised location names, instead of just presenting the English variants.

Where? Note that there are translations for regions and timezones, but they are not done through the regular Transifex translations -- frankly I don't think there's much point in translating "Amsterdam" into 80 languages even if امستيردام would make more sense for some readers. I don't think that displaying Новосибирск helps if you're installing in Japanese either.
All that said, you can create translations by copying e.g. lang/tz_en.ts and filing a PR to add a new file for any available language in Calamares.
I was hoping that Qt had a way to call the ISO names on the time zone selection step -- haven't looked into it though. I agree that it's tedious to create strings manually for these.
