Noticed in this article that the word U.S. is being separated as two different words.

This is because of the punctuation. Short of writing an unruly exceptions list I don't see how to avoid this.

Err... Maybe I'm missing something, but what about just only treating it as multiple words when there's whitespace after the period...? :)
