It appears my method of calculation is slightly different from yours and it is causing me to get slightly different output.

for i in range(3362):

i can only think of two possibilities
- python's floating point complex numbers are less or differently precise to whatever you're using
- you have some slightly shifted mapping from integer coordinates x,y to imaginary number c

unless i'm missing something that should be obvious to me i think the description may need to be updated to make what is expected more explicit

ok i figured out i can almost match the output by changing the dividing factors from 81 and 41 to 80 and 40, but i'm still one character off from the expected output. the far left middle character should be checkerboard not filled

edit: if my math is right i am realizing the dividing factors make sense like this because they map 0 to -i and 40 to i (technically flipped from what it should be but it's symmetric) but if that's the goal i think my picture might be right and yours might be wrong, because i think that different character should map to precisely -2 + 0i, which is in the mandelbrot set. could be missing something

Yes, I agree. One needs to use <=2 as the checking condition, <2 was probably used to generate the current expected output.
