TinyEst - Tiny Estimator

Daniël de Kok <me@danieldk.eu>

Introduction

TinyEst (pronounced tiniest) is a maximum entropy model parameter optimizer for ranking tasks (e.g. parse ranking). It uses the liblbfgs library to minimize the negative log-likelihood of the model. The program emphasizes simplicity and clarity of data structures.

TinyEst has the following features:

  • LBFGS parameter estimation.
  • Smoothing using l1 and l2 regularizers.
  • Feature selection methods:
    • Grafting
    • Grafting-light

Compilation

Compilation of TinyEst requires a C99 compiler and the CMake build tool, and can be performed in two simple steps:

cmake .
make

Afterwards you will find the 'tinyest' library and 'estimate' utility.

Note: Unfortunately, Visual Studio does not support C99.

Input format

tinyest expect input in TADM format. A description on the TADM format can be found on the TADM page. tinyest does not support a header. Moreover, the frequency of an event can be a floating point number (e.g. to indicate the probability of an event rather than a frequency).
