Currently the config file defaults to the user local .influxdb.cnf, and running tests fails without that file.

Would it make more sense to autodetect the file? First try INFLUXDB_CONFIG_PATH env variable, then local user file, then system default which from the docs:

The local InfluxDB configuration file is located here:

Linux: /etc/influxdb/influxdb.conf
macOS: /usr/local/etc/influxdb.conf

BTW, the upstream sufficex are conf not cnf. A tiny inconsistency, but still ;)

Actually I see that the implemented parsing of config files was not intended for generic use. There are several config parsing packages available on CRAN. Maybe one could be used instead.
