Installing ete_toolchain without conda

I need the "external applications" to run stuff from the command line, but I don't want to use conda. It says I should manually compile from etetoolkit/ete_toolchain, but that repo seems to be empty. What am I missing?

WARNING: external applications not found
Install using conda (recomended):
 conda install -c etetoolkit ete_toolchain
or manually compile from:
 https://github.com/etetoolkit/ete_toolchain
