It would be a neat feature if there was a list in the edit menu that shows the recently opened git repos for quick access. This is quite common in a lot of software tools and would save some time. Because I don't always want to add a bokmark and may use a repo only for a day or so.

Yes it would. One approach would be to kickoff a task to update a json-encoded list at ~/.config/git-cola/recent at startup. The menu could build itself based on its contents.
List recent repositories after the list of bookmarks.
