The GVFS provider, by default, creates a ~/.gvfsCache folder during cloning, or a different location may be specified with --local-cache-path. As with #9, we should change the default name of this folder to .vfsforgitCache, at least on Linux.
Is it possible that a subdirectory of the XDG cache directory could be used for this purpose? Normally that would be $HOME/.cache if not specified in $XDG_CACHE_DIR. That makes it easier to find and clean up if disk space is tight.
I'm not sure why the Mac version, by default, seems to use ~/.gvfsCache ... but as for the XDG suggestion, I do like that, and it reminds me of my own issue over in microsoft/dotnet#880!
