Currently, it is not possible to get a completely plain txt output.

If I specify a layout with *.txt.st or *.markdown.st extension, it is equivalent
pandoc -t markdown

I think that it will be useful if *.txt.st is treated as
pandoc -t plain

I need something similar but for templates, not layouts. I want to generate an RSS feed but the template I use for generating the different items is interpreted as markdown which results in an additional <p> tag, which is invald RSS.

Maybe there could also be a naming convention for templates that allows them to be interpreted as plain text (or in my case XML).

Agreed, something to allow for generating RSS feeds would be useful.
