This is something that I would be keen for too. I make heavy use of the yaml blocks for markdown->pdf and it would be good to be able to use this for a website as well (with suitable changes to the template). Only allowing variables that would currently go in 'data:' would be useful, but even better would be to allow 'title:', 'template:' etc to be specified in the yaml block. This is the approach used by Jekyll and seems to work well.
Why you don't implement that YAML headers could contain the data of the template. This could be simple, because no external document were needed.
