using SPL from apritzel/u-boot.git works, but from upstream doesn't for some reason

spl from https://github.com/apritzel/u-boot.git, branch: sunxi64-image-20180316
sudo dd if=spl/sunxi-spl.bin of=/dev/sda bs=8k seek=1

u-boot from upstream
sudo dd if=u-boot.itb of=/dev/sda bs=8k seek=5
