lengend overlaps graph

hi , on master when calling a lengend the lengend overlaps the plot

I believe this is issue #1419 again. The fix and test is in pull request #1420. The issue is not that the legend overlaps the entire plot rather all of the plot outside the legend is cut away when using bbox_inches='tight' which the IPython notebook does normally. The fix is simple as a union of bboxes was removed on master by accident, this should be restored. It would be good if the fix could be merged soon since a lot of issues have been reported here and on the IPython list. The test can wait if need be.
