closes #1465

pyflakes picked up on some code that didn't work (undefined element). This PR removes this code.

@NelleV Sorry, I was unclear, I meant "down to but not including" the comment. Sort of like Python indexing. I would suggest leaving in the "### Labelling" comment because it is a separator, signaling that label-related methods follow. Putting in a few such comments was part of my long-ago reorganization. I think they are still helpful.
