### Steps to reproduce:
1: Connect Brailliant BI40 Via USB
2: Start NVDA 2017.3
3: Check Brailliant is working properly
4: Put computer into sleep mode
5: Wake Computer
6: Check Brailliant is working properly.

### Expected behavior:
After leaving sleep mode, the Brailliant
should reactivate automatically

### Actual behavior:
The Brailliant does not reactivate

### System configuration:
NVDA version: 2017.3

Windows version:
Windows 10 Version 1709 and previous versions of Windows 10

Other Information:
If I go to the device manager and revoke permission for the PC/laptop to turn off the USB hub, then sleeping does not deactivate the Braiiliant, and the device still works after waking the computer.

Does the issue still occur after restarting your PC?
Yes every time

Have you tried any other versions of NVDA?
NVDA source-master-e8144ao
same problem

The Brailliant has some issues when losing a connection and reconnecting, especially when disconnected while NVDA is running or when being connected to another computer without being turned off first. I have the feeling this is partly a firmware issue. I will post the log exerpt when I next see this.

A few things might be happening here, could you please answer these questions:

  1. Which firmware version do you have? This can be displayed by scrolling down through the status info when the display is turned on and not connected,.
  2. Does the Brailliant sleep during the sleep of your computer? This is a setting in the firmware configuration menu of the display. If set to a certain time, the display will sleep if there is no USB connection after the set time.

As far as I know, the display wakes when the USB connection is reopened. However, the driver might have to re-initialize the display to let it work properly. If this is the case, it will be solved by braille autodetection (see #1271). I would advise to try this with the code in that branch. I might try that myself if time permits.

@DrDento Could you try NVDA's automatic detection of braille displays? This should reconnect if a connection is lost and I think might solve your issue.

We don't have any updates from the initial author since many years, @bramd made a proposal but the user didn't respond. Closing as abandoned.
If you are still having this issue, please comment and we can reopen.
