I run gpicview-0.2.5 on a Slackware based system and found the info that viewnior should support webp images if I install webp-pixbuf-loader.
Unfortunately that did not work for viewnior, and it not works for gvicview as well.
Does gvicview use gdk-pixbuf or another way for loading and determine the image files?

Is an update needed for gvicview to support webp?

0.2.5 2 years later still no webp. However adding webp-pixbuf-loader did fix it for me. You'd think these things would be declared as optional dependencies or something...

I'm currently experiencing memory leak with gpicview + webp.
Steps to reproduce:

  1. Ensure installed webp-pixbuf-loader
  2. Have at least 2 WEBPs in dir, open one.
  3. Switch between images, look at gpicview memory consumption (or just wait when it crashes if you have < 4 GiB RAM).
