download.openstreetmap.fr/extracts/ does not contain a europe wide extract so quickstart fails

running quickstart.sh europe returns the errors

Unable to load metadata for europe from http://download.openstreetmap.fr/extracts/europe-latest.osm.pbf: Status=403 for HEAD request
Unable to load md5 hash for europe from http://download.openstreetmap.fr/extracts/europe-latest.osm.pbf.md5: Received status=403

The files haven't been there for several days which suggests that they no-longer support it.

Geofabrik has it at

http://download.geofabrik.de/europe-latest.osm.pbf

but ./quickstart.sh europe geofabrik

which I thought should work returns

Unable to auto-detect the source for 'europe'
make: *** [Makefile:374: download-geofabrik] Error 1
