Spriting replaces transparent color with arbitrary color

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Enable spriteing
2. Create 2 or more transparent GIFs that use different colors for transparency
3. Look a the resulting sprite

(I'm assuming. I don't have a staging server appropriate for reproducing this 
problem in a clean-room environment.)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I expect to see the images appearing as they always do, properly transparent. 
Instead, all but one of the background colors is displayed. I assume that this 
is because only one color can be transparent. Seems to me that mod_pagespeed 
shouldn't combine sprite GIFs that have different background colors.

What version of the product are you using (please check X-Mod-Pagespeed
header)?

1.7.30.1-3609. (The problem started after updating to this version.)

On what operating system?

CentOS.

Which version of Apache?

2.2.17-1

Which MPM?

Oddly, httpd -l doesn't say.
