Right now the "new document" button exists in the Documents panel (which stays collapsed for some people). Being able to double-click the tab bar to create a new tab would be a nice feature (some other programs, such as Notepad++ do this). Alternatively, moving the icon (or creating another one) to make a new tab somewhere closer to the tab bar would be beneficial.

I usually just use Ctrl+N :)
