Users can currently zoom a timeline with their mouse wheel, but it would be more intuitive to add some buttons or other UI elements to zoom a timeline.

It might also be useful to allow zooming out further. We are currently adding events from 1844 to our site, and it takes a long time to move 150 years, even at the coarsest timescale.

@cbranton are you in a situation where you have only dates from 1844 and the elements not centering, or going to the beginning takes time?

Both, actually. But I am still in the process of upgrading to the latest builds of the Neatline plugins, and we have had several students adding data recently, so I want to do a little more testing before I assert that the timeline is not centering properly. I just thought that if it were not too hard to allow zooming out one more order of magnitude, for instance, that might be helpful for timelines that cover more than a few decades.

It sounds like Issue #27 – customizable time intervals for bands – would also be helpful to you.

@clioweb this may be as simple as abstracting @davidmcclure's zoom tools for the timeline in the Neatline plugin

@waynegraham Agreed. Will take a look at that code.

I'd also be interested the ability to zoom out further, or apply customizable time intervals - Thanks.

+1, and a slightly different use case from @cbranton: We're teaching with Omeka and would like to use Neatline Time as a teaching tool for chronology of items but also for the a-ha of showing students about good metadata entry. The timeline does a fab job of demonstrating how sloppy metadata results in items at year 0 when no year was entered or year 13 when the date was entered as 15.10.13. Dealing with a timeline with items at year 0 all the way to present (more or less) is, um, tedious. We'd like to zoom out to century or even millennium. Happy to open a new issue if this is deemed a separate use case.

This would entail:

  • need to add a pane of widgets;
  • need to create and position the buttons; and
  • handler.
