Some plug-in mechanism to access the hardware or software encoders/decoders present on the system, even though the browser may not natively support them.

For folks interested, am I right that this is this mostly about HEVC? Or are there other codecs you see on platforms that are frequently missing from browsers?

As discussed during the live sessions, codecs used in media production workflows are more specialized ones, like REDCODE, ARRIRAW, or ProRes.
