After a brainstorming session with @afeld, @elainekamlley and @wslack, we agreed on creating a centralized location on the hub for non-18F open source contributors. Here are some notes from that conversation:

  • Centralized place to learn how to contribute to any 18F opensource project
  • How to set up a Jekyll site (or other frameworks)
  • Where to go to ask questions or get help
  • How to submit a pull request, or even what a pull request is
  • Possible code expectations (although, this will most likely be project based)
  • "Make your first pull request" exercise, like the one done on the "Hour of Code" day, e.g. http://18f.github.io/hourofcode/addyourname.html

Sweeet. Also, something I think we could stand to support more broadly: The ./go script convention. (i.e. A script named go, not a script written in Go.) It would lower the barrier both to onboarding and outside contributions.

This issue may not be the right place to track it, but wanted to put the bug in your brains.
