Goal: Figure out how users will discover / navigate to election pages and present as a flowchart.

So thinking about this today and could see two options for discovering election pages. The first way would be have a separate tool that looks something like this:

It could live on the home page and also on it's own page. By typing in a zip code or address it could asynchronously load in the elections relevant to you, allowing you to navigate to them. The flow would work like this:

election flow a

The other way is to allow a "search by zip code or street address" option in the main search box, which takes you to a specialized search results page for elections.

election flow b

In both, you would also navigate to the page from individual candidate pages as well. A couple other thoughts:

  • My hypothesis is that the best way for people to find their elections is by typing in a zip code (or if possible, their street address), as opposed to navigating a map
  • Not sure if a map of the state with districts is helpful or not, but regardless probably not critical at first
  • I think the advantage to doing Option A is it may be beneficial to have this as a separate lookup widget from the main search as it functions pretty differently

Ready for work on the UX of the location lookup widget to decide if the search results are pulled in dynamically or if you're taken to another search results page. Be prepared to handle results for multiple states for certain zip codes. Moving that work to another issue.
