Deeper Than Rap received positive reviews from critics, who praised Ross's lyrical skills, production quality, and guest selection. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 158,000 copies in its first week. It also reached the top ten of several other charts, including the UK R&B Albums Chart and the Canadian Albums Chart. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling over 500,000 copies in the US.

The album spawned four singles: "Magnificent" featuring John Legend, "Maybach Music 2" featuring Kanye West, Lil Wayne and T-Pain, "All I Really Want" featuring The-Dream, and "The Boss" featuring T-Pain. The singles also performed well on the charts, with "Magnificent" peaking at number 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the Hot Rap Songs chart. Deeper Than Rap is widely regarded as one of Ross's best albums and a classic in his discography.

Ross's musical influences for Deeper Than Rap include soul, R&B, jazz, and reggae. He worked with several producers on the album, such as J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, The Inkredibles, The Runners, DJ Toomp, and Drumma Boy. Ross also collaborated with DJ Khaled, who served as the executive producer of the album. Ross said that he wanted to create a "timeless masterpiece" that would showcase his artistic growth and versatility.

Deeper Than Rap also reflects Ross's personal and professional struggles at the time of its release. Ross was involved in a highly publicized feud with fellow rapper 50 Cent, who released several diss tracks and videos against him. Ross also faced allegations of being a former correctional officer, which he initially denied but later admitted. Ross said that he used these challenges as motivation to make a better album and prove his critics wrong.

The album's title Deeper Than Rap signifies Ross's ambition to transcend the stereotypes and limitations of rap music. Ross said that he wanted to make music that would appeal to a wider audience and touch on different topics and emotions. He also said that he wanted to inspire other artists to be more creative and original. Ross said that Deeper Than Rap is "more than just a rap album, it's a statement".

The album's lead single, "Magnificent", was released on February 24, 2009. The song features vocals from John Legend and production by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. The song peaked at number 62 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the Hot Rap Songs chart. The music video for the song was directed by Gil Green and filmed in Colombia. [8]

The album's second single, "Maybach Music 2", was released on May 19, 2009. The song features vocals from Kanye West, Lil Wayne and T-Pain and production by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. The song peaked at number 92 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 19 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. The song is a sequel to "Maybach Music" from Ross's previous album Trilla (2008), which featured Jay-Z. [9]
