Comment from James Davies in cea2, "AppleWin 1.27.0 (release)":

You should add this information [what you said] to the "AppleWin Help/Using the Keyboard" page in a new section for the Caps-Lock key (explaining this AppleWin behavior). [Caps-lock is only mentioned twice, on the "Configuration" page and on the "Keyboard" page.]

And my description:

Here's how AppleWin behaves (and has always behaved):

  1. On start-up, AppleWin always begins with the Apple II's Caps Lock enabled, regardless of the current state of the PC's Caps Lock key.

  2. Now (assuming Caps Lock is off) when you press the PC's Caps Lock key the 1st time, this will actually enable the PC's lock, and AppleWin will see this but remain in the Caps Lock enabled state.

  3. Finally press the PC's Caps Lock key a 2nd time, and now AppleWin will disable Caps Lock and allow lower-case to be used.

  4. ...and subsequent toggling of the PC's Caps Lock key will continue to be tracked and replicated by AppleWin.

Of course you must be emulating a //e or Enhanced//e (so not a II or II+).

Also in AppleWin's UI, there is a little icon in the bottom right of the window which shows either 'A' or 'a' to reflect the current state of the emulated Apple II's Caps Lock.

NB. This icon doesn't update in the initial AppleWin logo screen, and isn't visible in full-screen when you uncheck the Config's "drive/keyboard status".
