If we've fixed the dates, I think it would probably be a good idea to start up a new website and send a first announcement so people can save the date?

Yes, now is the time

I've taken a first stab at making a website for AstroHackweek 2017. I couldn't figure out how to do PRs to the organization rather than a repo, so I've stuck it in a new 2017 repo.

Comments/suggestions/pull requests welcome. I think it might be useful to try and get an announcement out in the not too distant future?

Thanks for getting it going!

I would either put the new website into the astrohackweek.github.io repo (master branch) so that it appears on astrohackweek.org. Or put it in the gh-pages branch of the 2017 repo so it appears on astrohackweek.org/2017 and set up a redirect in the astrohackweek.github.io repo to that address.

Whichever is easier?

I didn't want to put it up right away in case I did something grossly incorrect that the rest of you might catch before it goes online.

be bold; post! and close this issue. @kbarbary decide how we proceed, technically.

Will close this once someone (who is not me) volunteers to write+send a first announcement.

Let's just redirect astrohackweek.github.io to astrohackweek.github.io/2017 once we think it's ready.
