So, after a discussion with O(Aaron) today I was told to raise this as I couldn't find the wiki itself on the site. Basically in terms of information sign-posting the initial site landing does a very poor job.

I have since been informed the information is behind the attend and organise links, but wanted to raise this to discuss as those titles do not immediately suggest that they connect to a wiki with resources about each activity. It instead would seem at first impression that attend may link to a list of Hackathons to go to and Organise to looking for local ones to get involved with rather than resources. Potentially some rebranding or alternative routes to the information that are more explicit about these being resources may be of benefit.

This has been an issue for a while. Adding those buttons was a quick fix. Maybe adding some text before the buttons to explain that they link to the wiki?

Do you have any suggestions that you think could work? Help is always appreciated! 🙌

So, it might be overkill in the other direction but maybe having Attending, Organising and Sponsoring as buttons under a Resources heading, and maybe a Resources landing page that acts as the Wiki home while Index acts as the overall site home? I know I initially was looking for a button that said Wiki or Resources when I was looking for the wiki.

This is a really valid point that needs to be addressed. @wrussell1999 is right, I think the current format was always intended to be a temporary fix.

Why not just rename the Organise button to Wiki?

The issue I'd raise with that is we have wiki style content under the other headings too, how to attend, what to bring etc.

Maybe change all the buttons so they're consistent

  • how to attend
  • how to organise
  • how to sponsor
  • how to volunteer
  • how to chat (errrrm maybe not)?

Something along those lines. Maybe move Chat to somewhere else as it's not a wiki as such. Maybe a FAB style thing.

Having repeated text on buttons feels soooo 2000s though... Seriously though, it is not aesthetic.

Potentially some rebranding

I feel like this actually highlights a bigger issue with brand in general right now, hack.athon.uk was originally just a Wiki. However as has become really obvious from all of the event promotion, the Discord, and the second unconference around the corner, its become so much more.

I think we need to have a discussion about the Hackathons UK/hack.athon.uk brands, and what belongs where. We're also earlier enough in all of this that re-focussing elements of brand is fine.

Looking for comment from @bahorn, @robzwolf, and @wrussell1999 in particular on this.

I think we should separate the wiki part of the site, and brand part. Sort of like I started pointing at with my PR that reorganised a lot of things.

Maybe we have a button called Wiki which goes to a landing page for the wiki, with the section for attending, organising, sponsoring etc.

This all goes under hack.athon.uk/wiki

This means the event calendar can stay clearly separate, as well as hexbin, and any other things we want to introduce.

Part of the issue I see is the wiki has other things but it's important to keep the clear separation as mentioned above.
