What

Users can install plugins by navigating to Plugins > Add New on their dashboards. A search tool is available on this page for plugin discovery and installation. However, there is no explicit disclaimer regarding the endorsement or guarantee of these plugins' functionality.

I'd like to request to have a disclaimer or messaging on both the Plugins > Add New page and individual plugin pages (ie https://wordpress.com/plugins/wp-content-copy-protector/) to clarify that community or third-party plugins are not endorsed by WordPress.com. Additionally, state that there is no guarantee of their compatibility with users' sites and that support is not provided if the plugins do not function as expected.

There is a current link to https://wordpress.com/third-party-plugins-terms/ on individual plugin pages but lacks visibility and the page looks a bit outdated. The link's visibility and the page's design could use some enhancements.

Why

This will eliminate any perception that we are promoting, endorsing, supporting, or selling these plugins through our site.

How

  1. Implement the disclaimer on the Plugins > Add New page.
  2. Display the disclaimer on individual plugin pages, such as https://wordpress.com/plugins/wp-content-copy-protector/.

@druesome, I opened a similar issue 3 years ago: #48675 Do you think it could be a better to address this when the site is made AT for the first time than adding it to individual plugin pages?

My hunch is that no matter how many disclaimers we add, some users are always going to be confused and frustrated but that this has more to do with the nature of open source that with dotcom iteself.

@mrfoxtalbot I agree that having a pre-AT disclaimer can be quite useful.

However, users tend to click on all the things without reading and be forgetful at the same time, so I'd say having the disclaimer before the site goes AT and on individual plugin pages would be nice.

I agree that two notices would be better than one. Especially because having a persistent message available on all dotcom plugin pages would allow us to point used to that message if they are confused or have incorrect expectations.
