Plenty of examples to check in here:
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3537727

The actual menu option works no matter which gif (original or quoted) you click on, but only the original refreshes with the image.

I noticed some of the gifs weren't replaced in the thread too (like the second one in the second post on page... two) but that might just be a rare performance issue on a page full of huge images.
