We should add a note to help text to indicate this + improve the error message.

Current help text:

Suggested help text:

The template branch to initialize from. Must be used with -t/--template

Current error:

ERROR: template name required when specifying a branch name

Suggested error:

ERROR: Using -b, --branch requires -t, --template to be specified

Or something similar (we just want to guide the user better).
