Using the pallet feature in the editor (edit the current image in external editor) is good for opening one file at a time. But, having to open similarly edited photos one at a time, like what's often seen in a portrait photo shoot, can be time consuming.

My feature request would be to make available the "Edit in" command within a right click context menu. I suggest placing it in both the Film Strip and File Browser. This way it could be available when working in Single Tab mode or by way of the File Browser in Multi Tab Mode.

Simply. . . Group select>right click>scroll to "Edit in" and then pick one of the listed external editors like Gimp or PS. An enhancement would be for RT to recognize what external editing programs are on each individuals computer and AUTO generate a list. The alternative would be the ability to add a path, thus adding a program to the list.

With this new feature much time could be saved from having to go back and forth in order to add multiple files for editing in an external editor.

I do not yet fully grasp the benefit of this. RawTherapee's main goal is to edit raw files. This request is seems to be intended primarily for non-raw files and a workflow with multiple round trips back and forth to an external editor. Am I correct?

Roel, that is not why I made this request. I'm looking for a way to send multiple RAW files at one time to the external editor, for the purpose of saving time. Think of it as a one way trip to the external editor, no back and forth.

When I do product photos I might have 6 shots taken at different angles. Send one to PS, go back to RT, send another to PS and so on until all are in PS. Just looking for and easier way to work. Hope this helps.

@Stuntflyer then I partly misunderstood, sorry about that. So you edited a bunch of similar images in the same way, and you want all of them in Photoshop at once. I can see how RT can be more accommodating for that.
A question still remains, what would you do with that series in Photoshop? Edit them all, or culling? Or...

I think of RT as a first step in my photo editing workflow. Obviously RT can't do everything, though sometimes the results are good enough so that there is no need for additional edits in an external editor.

For those times that I do need additional edits, I would go to a program like PS. Here is where having the export multiple images feature would come in handy. Once the photos are In PS, I would edit all of the photos and then down sample and save to jpg. I would not bring those tiff files back into RT for more edits. Andy suggests that the only time one might want to do that is for Lanczos upsampling. Btw; culling is something that I would do in my DAM software before any RT edits are done.

Have you considered using the "Put to queue" option in the file browser then opening the processed images from the external program? If I'm correct, the Windows version also has an "Open with" option that will open the queue-processed images in one of several pre-defined programs.

The "Open with" option does not offer several pre-defined programs, unfortunately.

Here are the steps I did which did not work.

  1. Right click on the selected processed files in the "File Browser"
  2. Select "Put in queue"
  3. Process the selected images in the "Queue" as 16bit TIF.
  4. Right click on the processed TIF files that are now in the "File Browser"
  5. Click "Open with" where the only option is "windows default viewer (queue processed".
  6. Nothing happens when I try to send to "windows default viewer" because I am sending multiple files which the viewer can't handle. Unfortunately it is a viewer and not an editor.

After the images are in the queue, you need to start the processing. The idea is to use the queue to process and save multiple images at once, then open the new files in your external editor.

Since the "Open with" option only supports specific programs (I can't find the list on RawPedia), you will not be able to use this to send the processed images to your external editor. You'll need to find another way to open the images.

I corrected my steps. . .see above. With this not being an option I guess I will have to fall back on my original request for this feature to be added to RT.

If we could get that "Edit in" option to either "AUTO" show or be able to manually input third party editors it would potentially solve the problem I am having.

Thanks for trying!

In windows the default viewer under the "Open with" command is "Windows Photo Viewer". Seems like there would need to be an "Edit in" or "Open with"option on that context menu with an available list of third party editors.

I trying to find a way to avoid having to go to my DAM to open those tif files after they have been processed by the "Queue".

I see the possible options as. . .

  1. Send processed tiffs to external editor after being processed by the "Queue" from the "File Browser"
  2. Send processed RAWs to external editor from "File browser" or "Filmstrip"
