<desc type="foundation">Local tradition claims that the first church on this site was built by <persName ref="PRS1854Amdase">King ʿĀmda Ṣǝyon I</persName> (r. <date>1314-1334</date>).
Among the local tābots, one is dedicated to <persName ref="PRS6298Libanos" type="tabot">Maṭṭāʿ/Libānos</persName>, and one to <persName ref="PRS1906Ananyao" type="tabot">
<roleName type="title">ʾabbā</roleName> ʾAnānyā</persName>,
head of <placeName ref="LOC2358DabraS">Dabra Ṣarābi</placeName>, one of the main <persName ref="PRS11207Ewostateans">ʾEwosṭatean</persName> communities.
An ancient (Aksumite?) pillar stands in the doorway of the gate house, and another one is included in the masonry of the wall.
Several window grills, carved of stone, have been inserted in the windows of the gate house and of a half-ruined building to the left from the entrance.
Samāz is mentioned in one of the documents of the <ref type="mss" corresp="DabraLibanosHamGG"> "Golden Gospel" of Dabra Libānos of Hām</ref>. 
An <ref type="mss" corresp="ESsmm003#a2">Additio</ref> to the <ref type="mss" corresp="ESsmm003">Maṣḥāfa āslǝṭi</ref> written by <persName role="scribe" ref="PRS12076ZawaldaMaryam">Zawalda Māryām</persName>, a local mid-18th-cent. scribe,
recounts that the sanctuary of Samāz was built by <persName ref="PRS12119AsfaDengel">ʾabuna ʿAṣfa Dǝngǝl</persName> “on three stone pillars”.
Samāz was favored by <persName ref="PRS2012Arayas">
<roleName type="title">ras</roleName> ʾArʾāya Śǝllāse</persName> (ca. 1869-88), a son of <persName ref="PRS10378Yohanne">King Yoḥannǝs IV</persName>, who donated at least one book to the church.</desc>
<ab type="history">Gadām. Formally, Samāz Māryām is a monastery, but the monastic community declined in 1980-90s; currently, there are no monks.
