<desc type="foundation">According to <ref type="work" corresp="LIT1467GadlaI">Gadla ʾIyasus Moʾā</ref> there were two
churches founded on the monastery's site. One was built around the <date notBefore="0900" notAfter="0999" cert="low">10th cent.</date> by <roleName type="title">ʾaṣe</roleName>
<persName ref="PRS3493Delnaod">Dǝlnāʿod</persName> and <roleName type="title">ʾabuna</roleName>
<persName ref="PRS8386SalamaI">Salāmā</persName> and dedicated to God the
Father. The other one was founded in <date when="0862" cert="low">862
AD</date> (or <date when="1167">1167 AD</date> according to
<persName ref="PRS3076Cerulli">Cerulli</persName>'s chronology),
consecrated by <roleName type="title">Metropolitan</roleName>
<persName ref="PRS2668Benyam">Bǝnyam</persName> and dedicated to
<roleName type="title">Saint</roleName>
<persName ref="PRS8974Stephen">Stephen</persName>. However, <ref type="work" corresp="LIT1467GadlaI">Gadla ʾIyasus Moʾā</ref> are
very incoherent and their goal seems rather to be to place the monastery's
foundation before the <persName ref="PRS10523Zagwe">Zāgʷe</persName>
dynasty.</desc>
<ab type="history">
<desc>The development of Dabra Ḥayq ʾƎsṭifānos began with the arrival of
<persName ref="PRS5633IyasusM">ʾIyasus Moʾā</persName> to the
island in approx. <date when="1248" precision="low">1248</date>. He
offered his support to <roleName type="title">ʾaṣe</roleName>
<persName ref="PRS10303Yekunno">Yǝkunno ʾAmlāk</persName> to seize
the throne of the <persName ref="PRS10523Zagwe">Zāgʷe</persName>.
The monastery became very close to the Ethiopian rulers and was richly
endowed with lands. Dabra Ḥayq ʾƎsṭifānos was destroyed and
looted by <persName ref="PRS1522Ahmadb">ʾAḥmad b. ʾIbrāhīm
al-Ġāzī</persName> in <date when="1532">1532</date>. However the
monastery continued to be an important religious centre throughout
the <date notBefore="1800" notAfter="1899">19th</date> and <date notBefore="1900" notAfter="1999">20th cent.</date> and has been
famous for its rich library.</desc>
