daǧǧāzmāč.</birth>

<placeName ref="INS0341DL"/></death>
<residence> She grew up in <placeName ref="LOC1216AddisA"/> and received a
traditional church education in her father's residence at <placeName ref="LOC5126Qabann"/>. After the death of her husband she moved to her father's
estate in <placeName ref="LOC1218AddisA"/>. </residence>

<floruit> She made a pilgrimage to <placeName ref="INS0341DL"/> and to <placeName ref="wd:Q1218"/>. In <date from="1935" to="1936"> 1935-36 </date> she became the
organizer and the vice-president of the Ethiopian Women Association and ecouraged
women to join the Ethiopian Red Cross. In the years <date from="1936" to="1941"> 1936-1941</date> she was
actively involved in propaganda, provision of supplies, intelligence work and
armed struggle.
In <date when="1936-07"> July 1936 </date> she played an active role in the Šawān patriot's
unsuccessful attempt to liberate Addis Ababa.
In <date when="1937-02"> February 1937, </date> after the attack on <persName ref="wd:Q319156"/>, she was
captured and exiled to <placeName ref="wd:Q38"/>, where she lived as political
prisoner on <placeName ref="wd:Q730500"/> and later on <placeName ref="wd:Q30029056"/>.
In <date when="1939"> 1939 </date> she was repatriated and resumed her underground work under the
pseudonym of <persName ref="PRS9234Tananna"/>.
In <date when="1940"> 1940 </date> she managed to establish a secret connection between <persName ref="PRS6635Mammoha"/> and <persName ref="PRS4303GabraMa"/>. This
operation led to the elimination of documents related to targeted places and
persons. In the same year <date when="1940"/>, she played an important role in the storming and fall of the
Italian military forts at <placeName ref="LOC3210JalduM"/> and <placeName ref="LOC1218AddisA"/>. She was captured by the Italians in the camp of <persName ref="PRS4511GarasuD"/>, imprisoned and senteced to death, but then released by the British forces. In <date when="1949"> 1949 </date> she pilgrimaged to <placeName ref="LOC1391AmbaGe"/> and to <placeName ref="LOC4244Laliba"/>, where she
died.
Š.G. is remembered as an example of genuine patriotism. The writers of her time referred to her as the "Ethiopian Joan of Arc" and the "Lion-Hearted Woman" of <placeName ref="wd:Q115"/>. <date notBefore="1941"/> she was honoured by <persName ref="PRS5226haylase"/>.
A street in <placeName ref="wd:Q3624"/> bears her name.
