New Message Modal Search: Error Handling not Consistent

In the New Message modal, when searching for recipients, sometimes the error message (for already chatting with that user) shows even if that isn't the case - it also returns the search results for that user. Other times, you search for a user and it returns the results and not the error message.

It is consistent when searching for someone you are currently chatting with, though
