What is the name of the app?

youtube-viewer

(Optional) Where is the app hosted?

https://github.com/trizen/youtube-viewer

About the app

youtube-viewer is a command line (and gtk) tool for playing youtube videos, it has playlist, no-video, and queueing support. it uses mpv or vlc to play videos.

youtube-viewer is a great program i have used for some time of my raspberry pi 4 and while it is fairly easy to install i think a pi-apps installer would be really helpful and would love to see created.

Thank you for your great work!

I just tried to run youtube-viewer as a new user would run it for the first time. It did not work, saying that I needed to set an API key. For those of you who have used youtube-viewer before, is the API key mandatory or optional?
For reference see: https://github.com/trizen/youtube-viewer#logging-in
If it is absolutely necessary for all users to create a Google account if they don't have one, then setup a 'project' in Google's interface in order to watch YouTube, I doubt many people would actually end up going through all the hassle.

The API key is needed but it is easy to set up, I think people would use it because it is really fast especially on lower-end hardware like the Raspberry Pi.
However you could set up an API key that is installed with the app so people can use that as a default automatically
or there is https://github.com/trizen/pipe-viewer which doesnt need an API key.
Should I implement this and create a pull request?

Not when there are already lightweight youtube-playing apps on Pi-Apps that do not require an API key. Please refer to YouTubuddy and FreeTube.

I consider this API requirement to be too much of a hindrance for the app to be a good fit. Closing the issue. Sure, feel free to open an issue about pipe-viewer.
