inethPerf: A quality of service monitoring tool platform for community networks

This project used iNethi community network as a case study which is deployed at Ocean View in Cape Town.

There have been many industrial and academic efforts to characterise the Internet through measurements. However, none of the prominent tools and platforms have sufficient footprint in the developing regions, including in wireless community networks.

Community networks are IP-based networks that arebuilt, operated and owned by communities of citizens. These networks are normally ran by non-profit organisation working together with local stakeholders.

Community networks are diverse in that they are built as a mixture of both wireless and wired links. As a result different routing systems and protocols are used. Such networks introduce different challenges when it comes to implementing a traditional network monitoring tool. Hence the need for a tool
designed specifically for community networks. Such a tool should be able to work around some of the limitations brought about by the underlying features of community networks.
