role (CHEBI:50906): A role is particular behaviour which a material entity may exhibit.
(comment: Not a great definition, but I can live with it.)
application: Intended use of the molecular entity or part thereof by humans.
(comment: Still not a great definition. It is mixing notions of "behavior" with "intended use", but I think I somewhat understand the definition is trying to say.)
pharmaceutical: Any substance introduced into a living organism with therapeutic or diagnostic purpose.
(comment: What!? The hierarchy has pharmaceutical as a type of application. But, an application is an "intended use" not a "substance")
drug: Any substance which when absorbed into a living organism may modify one or more of its functions. The term is generally accepted for a substance taken for a therapeutic purpose, but is also commonly used for abused substances.
(comment: Seems duplicative of drug product. How would a user chose between representing a something a drug vs drug product?)
Discussed by Asiyah, Sivaram and Bill on Aug 17, 2021:
It seems that the whole CHEBI.owl is imported into CIDO without harmonization/alignment to BFO, in the case of the Role.
Suggestion: if the terms under the CHEBI:role are not in use, it should be deleted from CIDO.
A subclass: COVID-19 drug role may be moved to a subclass of "clinical drug role" (DRON_00000001)
Observations: By definition, the DRON_0000001 "clinical drug role" does not differentiate the regulatory status of the drug, although it seems so from the label. Asiyah will reach out to Bill Hogan to discuss the possibilities of extending DRON to accommodate regulatory status of a drug.
