Hello all,

Some of you may have been aware that Ohio is making substantial changes to their reporting of COVID-19 deaths (news article). In summary, they are removing deaths that do not list COVID-19 as a cause of death on a death certificate (removing probable deaths and resulting in substantial delays in COVID-19 death reporting as it will now require death certificate review) and will only be publishing approximately twice weekly. Obviously, this is a very large change and misaligns Ohio with CDC recommendations for death reporting.

We've done our best to set up a system that will allow the Ohio today to be as comparable as possible given these known deficiencies in their reporting strategy. As such, we will be using this csv file to update our deaths based on date of death. With each update, we will also be overwriting the time series.

We apologize in advance that this is likely to be problematic, however we feel placed in a rock and hard place and believe this is the most manageable path forward. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Did Ohio Dump something like 467 deaths, today? I see that they might have had -157 a few days ago, so it may balance out. I'm seeing an abnormal rise in death count today, and I'm trying to find a way to compensate for it. I guess it may adjust itself out at the end of the day and there's no need to worry about it until then.

Update: FYI: The actual reporting turned out to be 751 deaths (OH) for 2021-03-05
