Rooted in the Socratic method of Ancient Classical Philosophy the First Principles approach has been advocated by Voltaire ("Think for yourself and let others enjoy the privilege of doing so too.") and more recently by Richard Feynman (see the Feynman Principles) and Elon Musk (The First Principles Method Explained by Elon Musk).
