Thoughts on GPS tracking #8

GPS tracking could make for a useful addition to this app, but it would likely be controversial.

I'm going to use this thread to discuss how this could possibly be implemented in a sane and useful way.

  1. It would have to be optional

  2. At minimum, you would make use of the tracked locations when submitting that you're infected. This could be used to generate some kind of public heat map so people can check exposures in the case where they may not have a phone or for some other reason.

  3. Some locations would potentially be sensitive, so this could be a secondary workflow that runs after submitting your private keys. Each location would presented individually to its owner so they decide whether or not to submit that one.

  4. This could be useful for narrowing out situations, say, where they're idling in traffic beside other people in a situation where transmission is likely not possible.
