.qgs and .qgz QGIS project files not associated with QGIS application

In the desktop/VNC view, when opening the file browser and double-clicking on the icon for the file shared/QGreenland/QGreenland_v3.0.0alpha2/qgreenland.qgs, the project does not open in QGIS as expected. This is not how I'd normally open a project file, but our workshop participants may try to. You can open it from the QGIS menus, so this isn't blocking anyone from using the project.

I may not be able to find time to look in to this, but I'm hoping I will before the workshop we'll run on the 23rd :)
